Terpenes 101: The Secret Behind Cannabis Flavour, Aroma & Effects
We make things that work better and last longer. Our products solve real problems with clean design and honest materials.
What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are aromatic organic compounds produced by virtually all plants — including cannabis. They're why a pine forest smells different from a citrus grove. In cannabis, over 200 terpenes have been identified, though most strains express 5–10 dominant ones. These compounds serve the plant as pest deterrents, pollinator attractors, and UV protectors. For consumers, they're the primary architects of flavour, aroma, and — increasingly understood — effect. The Entourage Effect: Terpenes don't just add flavour. Research suggests they interact synergistically with cannabinoids (THC, CBD) to modulate and enhance effects — a concept called the entourage effect. This is why two strains at the same THC percentage can feel dramatically different.
The 8 Most Important Cannabis Terpenes
| Myrcene |
Aroma: Earthy, musky, cloves, herbal Also in: Mangoes, hops, thyme |
|
Effects: Sedating, relaxing, couch-lock potential |
Common strains: OG Kush, Blue Dream, Granddaddy Purple |
| The most common cannabis terpene. High myrcene content (>0.5%) is associated with stronger sedation — hence the mango-before-cannabis myth (partially supported by increased myrcene absorption through fruit). | |
| Limonene |
Aroma: Citrus, lemon, orange, fresh Also in: Citrus fruit rinds, rosemary |
| Effects: Uplifting, anti-anxiety, mood elevation | Common strains: Lemon Haze, Wedding Cake, Do-Si-Dos |
| Associated with antidepressant and anxiolytic properties. Great for daytime use and social settings. | |
| Caryophyllene |
Aroma: Spicy, peppery, woody, cloves Also in: Black pepper, cloves, cinnamon |
|
Effects: Anti-inflammatory, stress relief, pain management |
Common strains: GSC (Girl Scout Cookies), Bubba Kush, Chemdog |
|
Unique among terpenes: it binds directly to CB2 cannabinoid receptors. Technically also a cannabinoid. Strong anti-inflammatory research support. |
|
| Linalool |
Aroma: Floral, lavender, light spice Also in: Lavender, mint, cinnamon |
| Effects: Calming, anti-anxiety, sleep-promoting | Common strains: Lavender, Amnesia Haze, LA Confidential |
|
The same compound responsible for lavender aromatherapy effects. Particularly effective for anxiety and insomnia. Common in indica-dominant and high-CBD strains. |
|
| Pinene |
Aroma: Pine, fresh forest, sharp Also in: Pine trees, rosemary, basil |
| Effects: Alertness, memory retention, bronchodilator | Common strains: Jack Herer, Trainwreck, Blue Dream |
|
May counteract some short-term memory impairment from THC. Associated with sharper, more alert highs. Alpha-pinene is a bronchodilator, potentially beneficial for asthma. |
|
| Terpinolene |
Aroma: Floral, fresh, piney, herbal |
| Effects: Uplifting, mildly sedating, antioxidant | Common strains: Jack Herer, Dutch Treat, Ghost Train Haze |
|
Less studied than others but associated with uplifting sativa-like effects. Often found in high-THC sativa strains. |
|
| Humulene |
Aroma: Earthy, woody, hoppy Also in: Hops, ginseng, coriander |
| Effects: Appetite suppressant, anti-inflammatory | Common strains: Headband, Sour Diesel, White Widow |
|
One of few cannabis terpenes associated with appetite suppression rather than stimulation — making it notable in strains that don't cause the munchies. |
|
| Ocimene |
Aroma: Sweet, herbal, woody, tropical Also in: Mint, parsley, orchids, mangoes |
|
Effects: Uplifting, antiviral, anti-fungal |
Common strains: Clementine, Golden Goat, Space Queen |
|
Often found in sweet, fruity strains. Associated with energetic, uplifting effects and has demonstrated antifungal and antiviral properties in preliminary research. |

How to Use Terpene Knowledge When Buying
- Ask your budtender for the terpene panel, not just the THC %. Many dispensaries have it on request.
- If the strain smells exactly like what you want to experience, that's a reliable buying signal.
- For anxiety: prioritize linalool + limonene strains over high-THC options.
- For sleep: myrcene + linalool + caryophyllene dominant profiles are your target.
- For energy and focus: limonene + pinene + terpinolene strains.
- Whole-flower consumption preserves terpenes better than concentrates (which often have terpenes re-added post-extraction).
