How to Clean Your Bong Properly (And Why It Actually Matters)
We make things that work better and last longer. Our products solve real problems with clean design and honest materials.
Most people clean their bong when it starts to look disgusting. That's already too late. Resin buildup, stagnant water, and biofilm don't just taste terrible — they harbour mould and bacteria that you're actively inhaling. A clean bong isn't about aesthetics; it's about not smoking through a petri dish. Here's the definitive guide to keeping your glass clean, fresh, and hitting like new.
Why Bong Hygiene Matters
Stagnant bong water becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and mould within 24–48 hours. Studies on shared water pipes found significant microbial contamination when water wasn't changed regularly. Beyond health, resin buildup changes the flavour of every hit — masking the terpene profile of your cannabis and making premium flower taste like an ashtray. If you spent good money on quality bud, a dirty bong is wasting it.
What You'll Need
• Isopropyl alcohol (ISO) — 91% or 99% is ideal. Higher concentration = faster dissolve.
• Coarse salt — Kosher or rock salt. Acts as an abrasive scrubber inside the glass.
• Zipper bags — For soaking the bowl and downstem separately.
• Pipe cleaners / cotton swabs — For tight joints and percolator holes.
• Rubber stoppers or your hands — To plug openings and shake effectively.
• Dish soap + warm water — For the final rinse.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide
Step 1: Empty and Rinse
Pour out all bong water immediately. Rinse with warm (not boiling — thermal shock can crack glass) water to loosen fresh residue. Do this after every single session.
Step 2: Disassemble
Remove the bowl and downstem. These trap the most resin and need to be cleaned separately.
Step 3: Salt + ISO in the Chamber
Pour roughly 3–4 tablespoons of coarse salt into the bong, then add ISO until the dirtiest areas are submerged. Cover all openings — mouthpiece and downstem hole — with your hands or rubber stoppers.
Step 4: Shake Vigorously
Shake for 2–5 minutes. The salt acts like sandpaper on the inside of the glass while the ISO dissolves the resin. You'll see the liquid turn brown — that's progress.
Step 5: Soak the Bowl and Downstem
Drop them in zipper bags with ISO and salt. Let them soak 30–60 minutes for heavy buildup, or shake immediately for lighter residue.
Step 6: Detail Clean
Use pipe cleaners for the downstem and any percolator slits. Cotton swabs work for bowl recesses.
Step 7: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse everything with warm water multiple times until no ISO smell remains. Then wash with dish soap and rinse again. ISO left behind will burn your lungs.
Step 8: Dry Before Use
Let components air dry completely. Water left in joints accelerates mould growth.
How Often Should You Clean Your Bong?
| Frequency | Task |
| After every session | Change the water |
| Every 2–3 sessions | Quick ISO shake + rinse |
| Weekly (regular use) | Full deep clean with salt + ISO soak |
| Monthly | Inspect silicone gaskets and joints for wear |
Alcohol-Free Cleaning Options
Don't have ISO on hand? White vinegar + baking soda works for light buildup — the fizzing action loosens residue. Commercial bong cleaners like Formula 420 or Kryptonite are also effective and don't require rinsing as thoroughly. Avoid bleach — it's harsh, leaves residue, and can damage certain glass finishes.
